Blue Horizon – a film which captures the lives of Andy Irons and David Rastovich – during a time when A.I. was on top of the competitive surfing world winning three world titles in a row and Rasta was paving a career for himself in the free surfing game – is set to be shown on the big screen across Australia once again to celebrate the anniversary of Andy’s 2002, ’03 and ’04 world titles.
The film, by Jack McCoy, won a number of awards including the 2004 Surfer Movie of the Year, and originally toured ten countries with 156 screenings in front of over 88,000 people. Following the success of The Occumentary tour, McCoy is now taking Blue Horizon back on the road, starting at Luna Palace in Leederville on 23 April.
As part of the tour, McCoy will be on hand to share some of the behind the scenes stories from the film. He will be joined by Rasta and some of Andy’s closest rivals and friends including the likes of Taj, Occy, Hedgy, Phil McDonald, Antman and more to be announced. There’s also rumours that Kelly might make a cameo appearance if he’s in town.
The cult classic film follows the journeys of two of the world’s best surfers of the time, both whom chose a different path to the pinnacle of surfing – Rasta chose to escape the spotlight and search for perfect waves across every corner of the globe, whilst Andy became the most famous surfer on the planet by plying his trade on the ASP World Tour.
McCoy began shooting the feature film in 2002 and captured Irons’ treble of world titles and the intense rivalry he shared with Kelly Slater which reached boiling point when Irons took down Slater in the final event of the year at Pipeline to claim the 2003 World Title.
“When I came up with the concept of the film, I wanted to show the audience the two distinct paths in professional surfing. It was ultimately the ying and yang of surfing and I not only had two of the best surfers to ever do it, but two of the most unique characters I’ve come across in my life. The end result was magic, I couldn’t have scripted it better.
“Andy has always held a special place in my heart and I wanted to do something to honour his legacy and what better way than to showcase the amazing drive and determination it took to become world champion. Not once, not twice, but three times in a row,” said McCoy.
