World record holder, surf coach and mental health advocate Blakey Johnston is on course to ride 1,000 waves in the month of July so far as he aims to break the record for the most hours surfed in a wavepool over a single month.
The record is currently held by tradie and Mentawai resort owner Ed Robinson who slept in his car and logged nine-hour surf days last winter.
Armed with an URBNSURF Winter Warrior Pass, Blakey will be making the commute to the Sydney Olympic Park and will need to average more than 4.5 hours of surfing per day in order to break the record. In his first week he’s ridden over 800 waves and is expected to reach 1,000 in the coming day or two. If he can keep this pace up, he’s looking at clocking close to 5,000 by the end of the month.
All the while, Blake’s juggling family commitments, a full-time job and a daily lengthy commute from Cronulla in order to get to the pool.
“I’m going all in on it. The URBNSURF Winter Warrior Pass gives me the space to show up, test myself, and reconnect with the process. It’s not just a challenge, it’s a reset,” said Johnston.
It’s not the first time Blake has put himself through a strong test of endurance. He currently holds the record for the world’s longest surf at 40 hours and 7 minutes, in which time he caught 707 waves.
