Many of us have followed Blake Johnston’s record-breaking surfing endeavours, including the overnight, 40hr-straight session at Cronulla and the month-long odyssey in the URBNsurf wave pool, where he racked up 256 sessions in July of 2025. Blake has in essence become the ambassador of stoic, surfing achievements.
While he has always been up-front about his goal to use his ambitious quests to raise awareness about mental health, Blake’s new film ‘In Pieces Together’ deals squarely with the issue of suicide and its impact upon Australian life. Blake lost his own father to suicide, and the film features a host of other high-profile people who speak candidly about the stifling role mental health problems play in our society.
While ‘In Pieces Together’ isn’t likely to gloss over the heavy subject matter, it still offers the hope that through Blake’s big initiatives others will be inspired to talk openly and take action against the problem. “This journey started from a deeply personal place,” explains Blake. “But these struggles aren’t unique to me. At the heart of this film is a simple belief – everyone deserves to feel awesome. If it can shift the way we talk about mental health, even just a little, and inspire people to reconnect, ask for help, or support someone else, then that ripple effect could be life-changing.”

‘In Pieces Together’ is directed and written by celebrated filmmaker Macario de Souza, perhaps best known for his work on ‘Bra Boys’, who admits personal experiences influenced his reason to get involved. “I met Blake when I was processing my own challenges and was inspired by the way he navigated mental health struggles with honesty and purpose,” de Souza said. “The film is about opening up better conversations that people, especially men struggle to have.”
Narrated by Luke Hemsworth and showcasing an eclectic soundtrack (Xavier Rudd, Grinspoon, Hermitude, Big Scary, Little May, Tony Snowdon, Kobie Dee and Kid Mac, alongside global icon Fred Again,) ‘In Pieces Together’ tackles tough subject matter and becomes a powerful piece of film, capable at once of informing, entertaining and inspiring an audience.
In Pieces Together will premiere on Fox Sports available on Kayo Sports and Foxtel, as well as Binge at 8.30pm AEST on May 13.
