Australia’s first ASP World Pro Junior Men’s event winner since 2001 |

“Yay, me!” Jack Freestone clebrates the big moment amongst friends and family.
Jack Freestone (Australia/Qld/Gold Coast) won the Oakley World Pro Junior Championships in Bali today defeating Dale Staples of South Africa. Eighteen year-old Freestone set up the win with an outstanding opening ride in the final of a 9.57 out of a possible 10 and went on to win with a combined two wave final tally of 13.84 to Staples on 8.44. It is Australia’s first ASP World Pro Junior Men’s event winner since 2001 when Joel Parkinson, also from the Gold Coast, won the title. With big name surfers like the USA’s Granger Larson, Kolohe Andino and Frances’s Maxime Huscenot failing to make it beyond fourth round you know this event had a high standard of surfing.
Ten’s were awarded to Nat Young from California after he landed a giant Gorkin Flip… For surfers of this calibre to not make the final Jacks’ result is that much more memorable – especially for his mother Kate who was on the beach watching.
The Oakley Pro Junior was the first of two events – the actual ASP World Pro Junior Champion for 2010 will for the first time be decided across two events, this one and a final event at Narrabeen in Sydney in early January.
For now, Freestone effectively leads the ratings for this title
