Popular opinion would hold that every wave in the Mentawai chain has been plundered, named, photographed and filmed.
However, there are still waves that fly under the radar. Subtle kinks in swell and wind bring them roaring to life. There to be claimed for the lucky few on hand when the right conditions conspire.
A group of grommets based at The Hidden Bay Resort in the Mentawai recently enjoyed a session where they least expected it – right out front of the resort on an outer reef just a few hundred metres offshore. For an afternoon it turned on, tossing up a mixed bag of racey barrels, rippable peaks and zippering walls; a wave with a lit bit of everything and a whole lot of fun on offer.
