Andy Irons Set to surf in the Breaka Burleigh Pro
By ASP | 02 February 2010 |
![]() In the wake of the announcement that ASP World Champions Mick Fanning and Mark Occhilupo will headline February’s ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4-Star, US$85,000 Breaka Burleigh Pro, another former ASP World Champion, Andy Irons (Hawaii), has just been added to the growing list of surfing superstars. A three-time (2002, 2003 and 2004) ASP Men’s World Champion, Irons’ addition to the field is another feather in the cap for Breaka Flavoured Milk, who are set to host one of Australia’s biggest international surfing events - The Breaka Burleigh Pro. Irons, Occhilupo and Fanning will be joined by a host of other current and former ASP World Tour competitors including current Pipeline Master Taj Burrow, former Hawaiian Triple Crown winner Bede Durbidge as well as Owen Wright, Dean Morrison, Jay Thompson, Nathan Hedge and Darren O’Rafferty just to name a few. The February (17-21) Breaka Burleigh Pro will be the first stand-alone professional surfing event to be staged at the iconic point-break in almost 10 years. Contest Director Scott Gillies said the event’s competitors, location and hype has all the ingredients a successful surfing competition needs. “To have world-class surfers like Mick Fanning, Occy (Mark Occhilupo) and now Andy Irons all competing in one of the world’s best waves, you can’t go wrong,” said Gillies. “The Breaka Burleigh Pro has secured an all-star field as well as placed the event in south-east Queensland’s prime swell period, which could certainly see the world’s best surfers welcoming back some Burleigh barrels to the professional stage,” he said. This looks like an awesome line up! It would be awesome if Newcastle Surfest had this type of pulling power. Unfortunately Surfest has now become shit beyond repair.
